Think You Could Be The Next Plus Size Curvy Model? The market for plus size clothing is booming, and as a result the clothing industry is responding. No longer is the larger woman unable to find clothes. And as a result there is a booming market for plus size curvy models. A plus size model is a plus size woman who models plus size clothes. But this definition can be taken further. Wikipedia defines a plus size model as: "Plus-size model is the term internationally applied to a woman larger than a standard U.S. size 8 who models clothing for consumers wearing a dress size 14 or higher in North American sizing, 10 or higher in Australian sizing, size 40 or higher in Europe, and 10 or higher in UK sizing." So there you have it, an exact definition of a plus size model. And if you're an aspiring plus size curvy model then there are some more requirements. Notice that we said plus size curvy model. Just like for skinny women, a plus size model needs to have the right curves in the right places. Here's some more from Wilipedia, who spell it out clearly: "The requirements for plus-size models are no different from those of high-fashion models, excepting in larger overall bust-waist-hip measurements; they must have excellent skin, hair and teeth, and emote well to the camera." So even for plus size female models there are entry requirements. But if you can satisfy the entry requirements then there is a very good career to be had. We love this interview with Barbara Bickner, a successful plus size model, where she lays out what it's like and what it took to become successful. Lets have a look at some of the entry requirements to becoming a plus size female model, because the reality is that not everyone will qualify. Plus size modelling entry requirementsYou need to have curves in the right places. You need to be reasonably fit and well toned, with good skin and good looks. You'll need to be a good looking woman, regardless of your size. The size requirements vary according to the work you undertake. For example print models tend to be around size 12 to 18 whereas runway work can be larger, perhaps up to 24. But still fit and good looking, and curvy. There are also height requirements according to the type of work you undertake. The work isn't easy. You need patience, a warm and easy going personality so you can get along with the people you work with, and the physical ability to undertake the work. You need a camera "presence". But if you don't fit those requirements don't despair. Many women still find work in niche areas of the plus size modelling industry. There are even openings for plus size teen modelling. So don't assume you are too young, too tall, too short, too big or anything else. You need to give it a good shot to find out if you'll make it, regardless of what you look like. Often it comes down to your own ability and perseverance rather than your physical characteristics. Where do you start if you're serious about becoming a plus size curvy model?
